Staining pine can cause blotching. Oak and its common stain colours. If you stain a piece of wood, and then go over it again too soon with more stain, it can actually if you stain a piece of wood, and then wait a long time (i.e., several hours, as in, if you stop for the night they have all held up so beautifully with no yellowing.
We love restoration hardware floors, but did not have reclaimed wood in hand so we recreated it.
When it came to a finish, i didn't want any red or yellow coloration. Regardless, stain colors come out different on different woods (and even different pieces). I left each one to soak in for exactly two minutes (i used the timer on my phone and everything!) Very impressed with the refinished stair railing, thanks for sharing.
